Ayodeji Olayanju: Academics Blood Matter Too!
Ayodeji Olayanju, Lecturer at Kingston University, shared on LinkedIn:
”Academics Blood Matter Too!
At the Standing Firm in Power and Pride with Sickle Cell event, one message stood out:
Georgelene Elliott reminded us how many lives could be saved if every member of a professional group donated blood.
Shifting the focus from Insurance professionals to Academics, here is the reality:
NHS needs: 1.6 million units of blood annually
Academics in UK HE: 240,000
If each donates 3 times/year → 720,000 donations
Each donation saves up to 3 lives → 2.16 million lives impacted
(That’s more than the NHS Blood and Transplant annual demand! > with students in the equation)
The Gap:
Only 3% of blood donors are from Black heritage communities
Ro blood is urgently needed for Black patients, especially those living with sickle cell disease
Imagine the Impact:
If every academic — starting with members of Society of Black Academics (SBA) — committed to donating blood, we could close the gap and save thousands of lives.
Please Take Action:
Roll up your sleeve. Donate blood. Save lives.
Together, we can make a difference.”
