Narat Srivali: Exploring the Link Between Perioperative Corticosteroids and VTE Risk
Narat Srivali, Assistant Professor at Duke University Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and Federica De Giacomi co-authored, published in Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy, adding:
“I’m pleased to share our newly published systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis in Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy: ‘Perioperative corticosteroids and venous thromboembolism risk: a systematic review with exploratory pooled meta-analysis.’
We synthesized evidence from four studies involving 78,282 patients to examine whether perioperative corticosteroids are associated with deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE).
While the pooled DVT estimate appeared to favor corticosteroids, this finding was driven overwhelmingly by a single observational study.
Randomized evidence did not support a protective effect, and the certainty of evidence was very low.
Our findings highlight the need for a dedicated, adequately powered randomized trial with prespecified VTE endpoints.
