Mital Jhaveri: What New Data Reveal About DOACs and Androgen Receptor Inhibitors?
Mital Jhaveri, Clinical Anticoagulation, Heart Failure Pharmacist at NYC HHC Queens Hospital Center, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Mary Beth Nierengarten, published in Cancer, adding:
”Drug Interactions in Focus: What New Data Reveal About DOACs and Androgen Receptor Inhibitors
Managing anticoagulation in cancer patients can be complex, particularly due to potential drug-drug interactions that may heighten bleeding or thrombotic risks.
A recent study published in Cancer examined 2,997 patients with prostate cancer who were receiving direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in conjunction with androgen receptor pathway inhibitors, including enzalutamide, apalutamide, or abiraterone.
Key findings include:
- No significant increase in thrombosis risk when using enzalutamide or apalutamide alongside DOACs.
- No significant increase in bleeding risk with abiraterone combined with DOACs.
- Real-world evidence supports the safe co-administration of these therapies in appropriately selected patients.
These findings offer valuable reassurance for clinicians making anticoagulation decisions for patients undergoing modern prostate cancer treatments.
They also underscore the importance of considering real-world outcomes alongside theoretical pharmacokinetic concerns.”
