Rasmus Borgquist: Silent Atherosclerosis is Far More Common Than Thought

Rasmus Borgquist, Medical Director, Head of Cardiovascular medicine at Novo Nordisk Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A new study published today from the REACT initiative shows that silent atherosclerosis – the underlying cause of most cardiovascular disease – is far more common than previously thought, including among younger adults.

The study also provides a detailed picture of how atherosclerosis develops across adult life.

The findings were presented here at the European Society of Cardiology Congress and simultaneously published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

At the Novo Nordisk Foundation, we want to help reduce the burden of cardiometabolic diseases, including cardiovascular disease – and prevention is key to that goal.

The new knowledge from REACT, a Danish-Spanish research collaboration funded by the Foundation, provides an important foundation for investigating whether earlier and more targeted prevention strategies can reduce heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular events later in life.

Congratulations to Henning Bundgaard, Borja Ibanez, and the many researchers at Rigshospitalet and CNIC Spanish National Center for Cardiovascular Research who have made this work possible.”
