Bernhard Gerber: Myocardial Platelet Activation Linked to Microvascular Obstruction After STEMI

Bernhard Gerber, Editor in Chief European Heart Journal Cardiovascular Imaging at European Society of Cardiology, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article  by Craig Balmforth et al., published in European Heart Journal, adding:

A fascinating study using 18F GP1 PET and CMR to investigate myocardial platelet activation and thrombosis in patients with microvascular obstruction (MVO) following STEMI.

MVO after STEMI was universally associated with myocardial platelet activation, extending beyond the structural abnormalities identified by cardiac MR.

These findings support an important mechanistic role of platelet mediated microvascular thrombosis in the development of no reflow and MVO, highlighting a potentially targetable biological pathway in a condition where effective therapies remain limited.

An exciting step toward better understanding the mechanisms underlying MVO and potentially identifying new therapeutic strategies for patients after STEMI.”
