Sumyea Kabir Highlights the Critical Role of Safe Donors in Blood Transfusion Safety
Sumyea Kabir, Head of the Department of Transfusion Medicine and Assistant Professor at ZHSWMCH, Dhaka, shared an insightful post on LinkedIn:
“Every Safe Transfusion Begins With a Safe Donor
Today, I was reminded once again of the delicate responsibility we hold in transfusion medicine.
During donor screening, I met:
A kind volunteer with BP 187/120 mmHg → deferred as per WHO & AABB guidelines, to protect their health.
A donor who came just after recovering from fever → encouraged them to rest and return once fully fit.
A student, eager but slightly underweight → explained why their health comes first, and reassured them that their willingness already matters.
Another donor on regular medication → guided them on when donation would be safe.
Saying “not today” is never easy when someone truly wants to give. But donor deferral is not rejection — it is protection, compassion, and responsibility.
In transfusion medicine, every step is about:
Safeguarding donors
Protecting patients
Building trust in blood donation
I am grateful to serve in a field where science and empathy go hand in hand, and where every decision — big or small — saves lives in more ways than one.
Safe donors, safe blood, safe patients — that is our promise.”
