Frits Rosendaal Receives ISTH Grant Medal for Lifetime Contributions to Thrombosis and Hemostasis Field
The ISTH is pleased to announce Frits Rosendaal, M.D., Ph.D., as the 2026 recipient of the ISTH Robert P. Grant Medal.
As the highest award of the ISTH, the Grant Medal honors an individual who has made significant lifetime contributions to the field of thrombosis and hemostasis. It reflects a career of excellence, innovation and service to the community, and recipients are widely regarded as having had a lasting impact on both the ISTH and the broader field.
Rosendaal is a Professor in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology at Leiden University Medical Center in Leiden, the Netherlands. He has had a long and distinguished history with the ISTH, serving as a member of the ISTH Council from 2002-2018, including serving as Council Chair (now called ISTH President) from 2008-2010 and as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) from 2013-2018. Rosendaal was President of the ISTH Congress in Amsterdam in 2013 and previously received the ISTH Distinguished Career BACH Award in 2005.
“Professor Rosendaal’s work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of thrombosis,” said ISTH President Pantep Angchaisuksiri, M.D. “His leadership in epidemiology and his commitment to science have influenced generations of researchers and improved patient care worldwide. It is an honor to recognize him with the prestigious ISTH Grant Medal.”
Rosendaal played a central role in shaping the ISTH into the organization it is today, including leading the recruitment of its first professional Executive Director and helping build the development of the ISTH World Thrombosis Day campaign.
“This recognition is deeply meaningful to me,” said Rosendaal. “My involvement with the ISTH has been both personally and professionally rewarding, offering the opportunity to contribute to research that advances the field while collaborating with a global community. I am proud to have contributed to the organization’s growth and evolution in advancing thrombosis and hemostasis worldwide.”
Rosendaal’s research interests focus on uncovering the causes of cardiovascular disorders, particularly venous thrombosis, through large-scale epidemiological studies. Over the course of his career, Rosendaal has led and contributed to numerous landmark discoveries, including leading a study that was instrumental in the discovery of Factor V Leiden and contributing to the key finding of the relationship between oral contraceptives and increased risk of venous thrombosis.
The award is named after Robert P. Grant, a renowned cardiologist who spent many years as a representative of the National Institutes of Health in Europe, traveling extensively and facilitating American-European collaboration in medical research and education.
The ISTH Grant Medal will be presented at the Opening Ceremony of the ISTH 2026 Congress in Paris, France.
