Heghine Khachatryan: New Evidence in Perioperative Hemostasis – Clinical Value of Perioperative TXA Use in General Surgery

Heghine Khachatryan, Editor-in-Chief of Hemostasis Today, Head of Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center, shared a post by JAMA Surgery on LinkedIn:

“New Evidence in Perioperative Hemostasis

A newly published systematic review and meta-analysis in JAMA Surgery highlights the clinical value of perioperative tranexamic acid (TXA) use in general surgery.

Key findings:

  •  Significant reduction in intraoperative blood loss
  •  Decreased transfusion requirements
  •  Lower incidence of major bleeding
  •  No observed increase in thromboembolic events

These data further support TXA as an effective and safe component of modern blood management strategies when used appropriately and with proper patient selection.

For hematologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and perioperative teams, this reinforces the importance of evidence-based antifibrinolytic use as part of multidisciplinary bleeding control and patient blood management (PBM) programs.

A meaningful step toward safer surgery, fewer transfusions, and better outcomes.”

Quoting JAMA Surgery’s post:

“Systematic review and meta-analysis: Prophylactic TXA use was associated with lower intraoperative blood loss, transfusion requirements, and major bleeding without an observed increase in thromboembolic or mortality risk.”
