Wolfgang Miesbach: Sweeteners – Not Always So Sweet for Your Heart!
Wolfgang Miesbach, Professor of Medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital, shared a post on X:
“Sweeteners: Not always so sweet for your heart! What appears to be a safe choice turns out to be not safe but a new disease driver:
Artificial and natural sweeteners (Aspartame, Sucralose, Stevia, Erythritol, Xylitol…)
- Up to 10,000x sweeter than sugar
- Found in many foods & drinks
New findings:
· Erythritol & Xylitol in blood → Gut microbiome shift
· Promote platelet activation:
o ↑Ca²⁺ release
o ↑ P-selectin
o ↑ AggregationHigher risk of clot, stroke, heart attack (esp. in obesity and diabetes)
Great presentation by Dr. Marco Witkowski from Germany at ISTH 2025.”
