Abhishek Jain: New Microphysiological Model Sheds Light on COVID-19 Vascular Complications
Abhishek Jain, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physiology and Cardiovascular Sciences at Texas A and M University College of Engineering, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, adding:
“Can microphysiological systems (MPS) be used in high containment environments to model serious infection-induced blood clots?
Our new work, with first author being my grad student Sreelakshmy Suresh, supported by UG scholar Rebecca John in Texas A and M University Department of Biomedical Engineering, is now published in International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH).
We use a simple-to-deploy human vessel-chip to uncover the ‘shear–cytokine crosstalk’ driving SARS-CoV-2 endotheliopathy.
Our collaborators include John Cooke at Houston Methodist and John Connor at Boston University School of Medicine.
We found that under both passive and the living virus exposure, while physiological blood flow (laminar shear stress) provides a ‘structural shield’ for our blood vessels, high levels of cytokine IL-6 can override this protection — fueling viral replication and creating a high-risk environment for thrombosis.
This research provides an easily tunable platform to test antivirals and therapies aimed at stabilizing the endothelium and preventing microthrombi.”
