Adil Nawaz: Extended Dual Antiplatelet Therapy After Coronary Stenting
Adil Nawaz, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery – MBBS, Surgery and Medicine at Khyber medical college Peshawar, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Cardiology in Review, adding:
”Does extending dual antiplatelet therapy beyond 12 months offer additional protection after coronary stenting?
After drug-eluting stent implantation, deciding whether to extend dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) beyond 12 months requires weighing the potential for preventing ischemic events against the risk of bleeding.
In our newly published systematic review and meta-analysis, extended DAPT was associated with a lower risk of myocardial infarction compared with aspirin monotherapy.
However, we found no statistically significant differences in other major cardiovascular outcomes, while uncertainty around bleeding risk remains.
These findings highlight an important distinction in clinical decision-making: reducing one adverse outcome does not necessarily translate into an overall benefit across all outcomes.
The challenge remains identifying which patients stand to benefit most from prolonged treatment without exposing others to unnecessary risk.
Glad to see this work published, bringing together evidence that may help inform the discussion around long-term antiplatelet strategies after PCI.
Pleased to have led the research and evidence synthesis for this project, working with Muhammad Abdullah Ali and our co-authors to bring these findings together.”
