Alejandro González Veliz: Can Coronary CT Reveal More Than Plaque?
Alejandro González Veliz, Interventional Cardiologist at Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, shared a post on LinkedIn about recent article by Shaun Khanna et al., published in JACC Journals, adding:
”Can coronary CT reveal more than plaque?
This post-hoc analysis of the CAUGHT-CAD trial showed that serial increases in epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) attenuation—not EAT volume—were independently associated with progression of non-calcified coronary plaque despite LDL reduction.
These findings reinforce the concept of residual inflammatory risk, suggesting that coronary CTA may eventually provide information not only about stenosis and plaque burden, but also about the inflammatory activity surrounding the coronary arteries.
While EAT attenuation is not yet ready for routine clinical decision-making, it may become an important imaging biomarker for understanding why atherosclerosis progresses despite optimal lipid control.
What do you think? Could EAT attenuation become part of future coronary CTA reporting?”
