Avril Mansfield: Why Aren’t More Stroke Patients Meeting Aerobic Exercise Guidelines?
Avril Mansfield, Senior Scientist at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:
”Aerobic exercise is an important part of stroke rehabilitation.
We know that most physiotherapists working in stroke rehab include aerobic exercise in their treatment, but we also know that physiotherapists report barriers to implementing aerobic exercise for all of their patients.
AJ wanted to know how many patients participate, how aerobic exercise is used in stroke rehab, and what patient characteristics predict participation.
While 40% of patients did some kind of ‘aerobic exercise’ in stroke rehab, only 26% had it included in their treatment plan, and <1% completed aerobic exercise that met clinical guidelines in terms of intensity and duration.
As expected, heart conditions and mobility status predicted participation in aerobic exercise.
Notably, mental health conditions were also associated with reduced participation in aerobic exercise.
We hope that the study results can inform approaches to increase participation in aerobic exercise during stroke rehab in the future.”
