Fouad Mikhail: Mechanical Thrombectomy and Anticoagulation in Intermediate-Risk Pulmonary Embolism

“Honored to share that our original research has been accepted for publication in Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions (CCI) Impact Factor: 2.1 (SJR: 0.964 -Q1 in Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine).

In this work, we took a granular, risk-stratified approach to a clinically urgent question:

  • In intermediate-risk PE, does mechanical thrombectomy offer a survival advantage over anticoagulation alone?

While MT was associated with lower 1-year mortality across both subgroups, the net clinical benefit differs sharply by risk profile—which may help refine patient selection for this rapidly adopted procedure.

  • Large, real‑world cohort from a federated network of 165+ healthcare organizations
  • Risk‑stratified design (low‑intermediate vs. high‑intermediate PE)
