Getnet Tarekegn: Comparing Oral Iron Preparations in Pediatric Iron Deficiency Anemia

Getnet Tarekegn, MD school of medicine acadamic quality coordinator at Bdu Cmhs Tibebe Ghion Comprehensive Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn, about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in BMC Pedriatrics, adding:

“New Publication BMC Pediatrics

I’m pleased to share our newly published systematic review and meta analysis in BMC Pediatrics:

‘Comparative efficacy and safety of oral iron polymaltose complex vs. ferrous sulphate in the treatment of pediatric iron deficiency anemia: a systematic review, meta analysis and trial sequential analysis.’

Key findings

We analyzed 8 randomized controlled trials involving 643 pediatric participants comparing iron polymaltose complex (IPC) with ferrous sulphate (FS).

Our findings showed that:

  • Ferrous sulphate produced a significantly greater increase in hemoglobin compared with iron polymaltose complex.
  • FS also demonstrated a greater increase in serum ferritin, although the available evidence for ferritin remained inconclusive because of limited and heterogeneous data.
  • Primary safety analyses found no statistically significant differences between IPC and FS in overall adverse events or diarrhea.
  • Sensitivity analyses suggested that IPC may have a lower overall adverse-event burden in certain pediatric contexts.

Overall, this study provides important evidence regarding the balance between efficacy and tolerability of commonly used oral iron preparations in children with iron deficiency anemia.

I’m grateful to all my co authors and colleagues for their valuable contributions and collaboration in this work.”
