Jacqueline van Paassen: Lack of Essential Clinical Data in DOAC Prescriptions in Community Pharmacies
Jacqueline van Paassen, Lecturer at Department Pharmaceutical Sciences at Universiteit Utrecht, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Clinical Pharmacy, adding;
”Our new research is online!
We conducted a mixed-methods study in the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy, revealing that 92.8 percent of DOAC prescriptions in community pharmacies lacked clinical data, such as treatment indication, renal function, or body weigh, needed to assess their appropriateness.
Using their clinical reasoning skills, community pharmacists requested missing data for over half of these prescriptions, primarily to evaluate dosing.
Motivated by a commitment to optimal patient care, their efforts led to adjustments in 5 percent of cases.
This research highlights the importance of pharmacists verifying DOAC prescriptions to ensure optimal patient care. Clinical data sharing could be optimised by streamlined interprofessional collaboration.”
