José Antonio García Erce Highlights the Updating of the Criteria for the Donation of Plasmapheresis for Industrial Fractionation

“NEW CAT 2025 STANDARDS VERSION
As of YESTERDAY, December 19, the 6th edition of the CAT Standards in Hemotherapy 2025 comes into force. From now on, transfusion centres and services will have a period of three months to adopt the changes.
We must congratulate and thank all the professionals involved in the new version. There are interesting new developments.
I would like to highlight the updating of the criteria for the donation of plasmapheresis for industrial fractionation. It can be of great help to Transfusion Centers.
But I want to highlight a point that was already in the previous edition and that should also be applicable to transfusion centers, to Primary Care, as well as to all hospitals where transfusions are made:
4.2.7. TS must promote and participate in hospital Patient Blood Management (PBM) programs, including specific training.
Unfortunately, its definition included in the document, sorry, is not correct: “Patient Blood Management: a comprehensive and multidisciplinary strategy focused primarily on minimizing the use of allogeneic blood components, optimizing patient care by treating anemia, minimizing blood loss and bleeding, and improving their physiological reserve of red blood cells.” It does not focus on minimizing use, but on clinical improvement and patient safety, and preserving, promoting, and protecting the blood health of the entire population.”
