La’Ron Browne: Balancing Clinical Benefits and Healthcare Costs in Hydroxyurea Management of SCD in Brazil
La’Ron Browne, Instructor at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Blood Global Hematology, adding:
”I am pleased to announce that our paper on Hydroxyurea therapy in Sickle Cell Disease (SCD): Evaluating healthcare costs and use in a Brazilian tertiary setting has been shortlisted by Blood Global Hematology for impactful manuscripts.
In our study, we highlight that while hydroxyurea (HU) decreased acute utilization in patients with SCD, it did not reduce overall healthcare costs.
The likely drivers of the total health costs were persistent chronic care management, decreased adherence, and later initiation of hydroxyurea.
These findings are important for many low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) and upper-middle-income countries (UMIC) to initiate conversations about implementing hydroxyurea early in life, which can help mitigate the long-standing costs associated with chronic diseases like SCD.”
