Leo Nicolai and Rainer Kaiser Link Procoagulant Platelets and Thromboinflammation in CVD

Leo Nicolai, Physician-Researcher in Cardiology at Medizinische Klinik und Poliklinik I, LMU Klinikum München, shared on LinkedIn:

”Happy to share Rainer Kaiser‘s and my review about procoagulant platelets in cardiovascular disease just published in Nature Reviews Cardiology’

Platelets play a central role in haemostasis following vascular injury and are essential for thrombus formation.

Beyond aggregation and clot contraction, platelets can enter a distinct, highly activated procoagulant state that contributes to the development of cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and deep vein thrombosis, and links thrombosis with inflammation.

This Review examines recent advances in understanding procoagulant platelets, including their role in macrovascular and microvascular clot formation and the key receptors and signalling pathways that define this activation state.

It also discusses the clinical relevance of procoagulant platelet activation and explores existing and emerging therapeutic strategies that may enable new diagnostic and treatment approaches for cardiovascular, inflammatory, and immune-mediated diseases.
