Lukong Hubert Shalanyuy: New Research on Thromboplastin Reagents and PT/INR Reliability
Lukong Hubert Shalanyuy, Vice Chancellor University Institute of La Pointe – IUP, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Open Access Library Journal, adding:
“I am honored to share another recent publication titled:
‘Comparative Evaluation of Bovine-Brain-Derived Thromboplastin versus Commercial Thromboplastin Reagents for Prothrombin Time and INR: A Pilot Experimental Study at National Polytechnic University Institute Medical Laboratory’, published in the Open Access Library Journal, Volume 13, Article e15743 (2026).
This pilot experimental study evaluated the analytical performance of locally prepared bovine-brain-derived thromboplastin against a commercial thromboplastin reagent for prothrombin time (PT) and international normalized ratio (INR) testing.
The findings demonstrated substantial variability and poor agreement between the two reagents, with the locally prepared bovine thromboplastin showing lower analytical reliability and a markedly different International Sensitivity Index.
The study has important implications for clinical laboratory medicine, hemostasis, anticoagulation monitoring and patient safety, particularly in resource-limited settings where locally prepared reagents may be used because of their affordability and accessibility.
The findings underscore the importance of reagent validation, calibration, standardization and quality assurance before laboratory methods are introduced into routine patient care.
I sincerely appreciate my co-authors and institutional collaborators whose contributions made this work possible.”
