Maciej Banach: The ‘Metastatic’ Cardiovascular Threat We Can No Longer Ignore
Maciej Banach, Vice-Rector for the Collegium Medicum at John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored:
“Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is the most neglected atherosclerotic cardiovascular condition.
Most patients are diagnosed very late and require surgical intervention.
Even after successful procedures, many are not managed optimally:
Only a small percentage achieve LDL‑C targets, leaving them at high risk of recurrent events.
This is a final call to diagnose these patients as early as possible (which is straightforward) and to treat them effectively.
To appreciate you the scale of the risk, note that when significant atherosclerosis is present in the peripheral vasculature, the likelihood of concurrent atherosclerotic progression in two other vascular beds is the highest – ranging from 14% to as much as 70%!
For that reason we should always compare atherosclerosis to metastatic cancer.
Early, accurate diagnosis and prompt, intensive combination therapy are essential!
This is why we are now focusing strongly on PAD/ PVD patients. I’m pleased to share that the first article in this series, ‘Atherosclerosis Features in Rheumatic Diseases – Focus on Peripheral Artery Disease,’ has just been accepted (soon available – stay tuned!) by Frontiers in Immunology.
Thank you to the amazing team of young, ambitious colleagues who made this possible.”
