Marc Carrier: The Vermont Model Demonstrates the Power of VTE Prevention
Marc Carrier, Professor at Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Chris Holmes et al, published in JCO Oncology Practice:
”Real-world evidence confirms what trials have shown: guideline-based VTE prevention matters.
In high-risk ambulatory cancer patients, a multidisciplinary program (‘Vermont model‘) led to:
- VTE: 3.2% vs 7.7% (OR 0.36)
- 6-month mortality: 16.8% vs 31.3% (OR 0.46)
- Despite strong evidence, uptake remains suboptimal, closing this gap is an immediate opportunity to improve outcomes in cancer care.”
