Marieke Kruip on Sex differences in Outcomes of VKA Treatment in Patients with Mechanical Heart Valve

Marieke Kruip, Professor haematology and quality of care at Erasmus MC, shared on LinkedIn:

”Our research on differences in the quality of anticoagulation treatment and clinical outcomes between men and women with mechanical heart valves has been published!

Our article on treatment with vitamin K antagonists shows that in women—particularly those under 55 years of age—the INR is less often within the therapeutic range and fluctuates more than in men.

Furthermore, the risk of thrombotic or bleeding complications also appears to be higher in women under 55 compared to men.

This calls for greater attention to sex-specific approaches in anticoagulation care!”
