Marios Georgakis: Largest GWAS of Transient Ischemic Attacks Reveals New Genetic Insights into Stroke Risk
Marios Georgakis, Research Group Leader and Physician at LMU Munich, Visiting Scientist at Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Shuyuan Hu et al, published in medRxiv, adding:
”Transient ischemic attacks (TIA) have been recognized since the 1950s as precursors of ischemic stroke and are treated accordingly.
We now have the largest GWAS for TIA, including 82,533 cases and 1,860,329 controls.
The study detected 44 loci, 25 of which have been previously associated with stroke or stroke subtypes.
The 19 ones not associated with stroke have largely been associated with vascular risk factors (mainly hypertension) or other manifestations of cardiovascular disease (e.g. coronary artery disease).
As expected, there were quite strong genetic correlations with all ischemic stroke subtypes, re-confirming the vascular origins of TIA, which for many patients remain unclear.
It is a great resource, as TIA can now be included as an outcome in genomic studies assessing drug target potential and secondary analyses of genetic signals related to vascular biology.
The summary stats can be useful for refining polygenic scores for stroke.”
