Tahsim Anwar: A Six-Year Analysis of Adverse Events in Therapeutic Apheresis

Tahsim Anwar, Assistant Professor at Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, adding:

“New publication alert!

Our paper ‘Risk Factor Analysis of Adverse Events in Therapeutic Apheresis: A Tertiary Care Center Perspective From Eastern India’ is now published in Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis.

Therapeutic apheresis is life-saving, but it carries risks. We looked at 348 procedures in 127 patients over 6 years at the Department of Transfusion Medicine, AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

What we found

  • Adverse events occurred in 54 procedures (15.5%) and in 45 patients (35.4%)
  • Hypotension was the most common event, followed by allergic reactions and febrile non-haemolytic reactions
  • Citrate toxicity was rare (0.6% of procedures), likely because of continuous calcium replacement
  • Most events were mild (Grade I–II). There was one Grade III event and no deaths
  • Key risk factors: the number of procedures per patient (5 or more sessions in TPE), neurological disease, and younger age

Why it matters

Closer monitoring and tailored preventive strategies, especially for patients needing repeated sessions, can make apheresis safer. This is relevant in resource-limited settings, where albumin is not always affordable and FFP is often the replacement fluid.

Thank you Satya Prakash sir, Somnath Mukherjee sir, and all my co-authors for this work.”
