Mehran Ghasemzadeh: Assessing Antibody Burden and Platelet Exhaustion in Chronic ITP
Mehran Ghasemzadeh, Professor at High Institute for Research and Education in Transfusion Medicine, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in British Journal of Haematology, adding:
“New Publication | British Journal of Haematology
I’m pleased to share our group’s latest paper in chronic ITP, extending our prior work in Scientific Reports where we introduced a functional panel to assess platelet exhaustion and distinguish responder from non-responder patients.
Building on that foundation, and with sincere thanks to my great research team and special appreciation to my good friend Professor Elizabeth Gardiner, this study presents a modified, semi-quantitative immunofluorescence assay to assess total platelet-reactive antibody burden in chronic ITP.
Using this lab-designed approach, we show that higher antibody burden correlates with platelet functional exhaustion, greater bleeding severity, and poorer treatment response – outperforming platelet count as a clinical biomarker.
A defined signal threshold effectively discriminated responders from non-responders.”
