Michael Megaly: Does Coronary Ectasia Affect Outcomes in Acute Coronary Syndromes?

Michael Megaly, Interventional Cardiologist at INTEGRIS Health, shared a post on X about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Cardiovascular Revascularization Medicine, adding:

“Does coronary ectasia affect outcomes in acute coronary syndromes?

Coronary ectasia is tough to manage. Our recent meta-analysis Cardiovascular Revascularization Medicine led by Ahmed Elmorsy Mohamed shows that the highest risk associated with coronary ectasia is recurrent MI, likely due to slow flow and thrombus burden (risk ratio 1.96), and a higher risk of stroke (RR 2.4).

With current medical therapy, there was no difference in mortality.

It is unclear if using anticoagulation would help, but given our study results, with the main risk focused on stroke and recurrent MI, I believe there would be a strong role for anticoagulation in these patients.”
