Neha Rastogi Panda: Precision Diagnosis and Organ Preservation in Splenic Abscess
Neha Rastogi Panda, Editorial Board Member at Transplant infectious diseases Journal, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Case Reports in Infectious Diseases, adding:
“Not Every Splenic Abscess Needs a Splenectomy – But Every Unusual Infection Demands an Answer.”
Pleased to share our latest publication in Case Reports in Infectious Diseases (Wiley, 2026), highlighting a rare bacterial–fungal splenic abscess in an immunocompetent patient.
An unusual co-infection with Salmonella Paratyphi A and Candida tropicalis in a previously healthy 30-year-old man presenting with persistent fever despite broad-spectrum antibiotics.
The outcome: Complete clinical and radiological recovery with microbiology-guided antimicrobial therapy and laparoscopic drainage—without splenectomy.
Key learnings:
- Think beyond conventional pathogens can occur even in immunocompetent hosts.
- Microbiology drives precision – Identify the pathogen before escalating antimicrobial therapy.
- Source control matters – Timely drainage can be pivotal to successful outcomes.
- Preserve when possible – Organ-sparing management is achievable in carefully selected patients.
Better outcomes are not always about bigger antibiotics or bigger surgeries – but about precise diagnosis, targeted therapy, and timely intervention.
Proud of this multidisciplinary collaboration at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, and grateful to all my co-authors.”
