Nour Al-Mozain: Rethinking the Role of Cold-Stored Platelets

Nour Al-Mozain, Associate Professor at Alfaisal University, shared this post on LinkedIn, adding:

CHIPS is a randomized clinical trial that shifts the question from:

‘Which platelet product lasts longer in circulation?’

to

‘Which best serves the patient with a particular medical condition?’

Cold-stored platelets may provide enhanced immediate hemostatic function, making them valuable for actively bleeding patients, not necessarily as a universal replacement for standard (room-temperature-stored) platelets.”

JAMA shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article published in JAMA, adding:

Research Summary: Cold-stored platelets may extend platelet shelf life to 21 days while maintaining efficacy and safety in cardiac surgery, with potential to reduce wastage and shortages.”
