Pete Stibbs: VTE in Professional Athletes – When Fitness Is Not Enough

Pete Stibbs, Senior Vice President, Global Medical Affairs and Medical Director at Argon Medical Devices, shared a post on LinkedIn about an article by Meghan Bishop et al., published in Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, adding:

“The recent news of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and multiple pulmonary emboli is an important reminder that venous thromboembolism (VTE) can affect anyone, regardless of age, health, or physical conditioning.

Hurts joins a notable group of elite athletes, including Chris Bosh, Serena Williams, and Victor Wembanyama, whose careers have been interrupted by thromboembolic disease.

An interesting publication in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, ‘Venous Thromboembolism Within Professional American Sport Leagues,’ highlights the clinical impact of VTE in professional athletes.

These cases reinforce the importance of early recognition, timely diagnosis, appropriate anticoagulation, and, when clinically indicated, advanced endovascular intervention.

As vascular medicine/vascular intervention continues to evolve, increasing awareness and improving treatment strategies remain essential to reducing morbidity, mortality, and long-term complications.

Wishing Jalen Hurts a full and speedy recovery.”
