”Venous Thromboembolism in Pregnancy: Diagnostic Challenges and Evolving Best Practices

My recent article in the NCCCR Newsletter (November 2025) discusses the complexities surrounding venous thromboembolism (VTE); a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide.

Pregnancy induces a hypercoagulable state, increasing the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) by up to 4-6 times compared with non-pregnant women. Diagnostic evaluation remains challenging due to overlapping physiological symptoms, limitations of clinical scoring systems, and lack of universally accepted diagnostic algorithms.

The article highlights recent advances in imaging, which now offers rapid, reliable imaging with significantly reduced radiation exposure. The importance of informed patient counseling during diagnostic evaluation is underscored, ensuring women understand both the clinical necessity and safety of imaging investigations.

Effective management of VTE in pregnancy requires multidisciplinary collaboration among hematology, obstetrics, radiology, anesthesia, and maternal-fetal medicine teams. A patient-centered approach that combines timely diagnosis, evidence-based prophylaxis, and empathetic communication is central to improving maternal outcomes.
