Sophia Delicou: Strengthening Transfusion Safety Through Advanced Screening and Haemovigilance

Sophia Delicou, Head of Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Unit, Head of the Expertise Center of Hemoglobin Diseases and Their Complications at Hippokrateio General Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Transfusion Clinique et Biologique, adding:

“Safer blood transfusions mean better protection for patients, especially those who depend on lifelong transfusion treatment.

We are pleased to share our new scientific publication in Transfusion Clinique et Biologique, presenting nearly 30 years (1996–2023) of national data on blood safety and transfusion-transmitted infections in Greece.

Based on over 14 million blood donations, the study demonstrates the value of advanced screening technologies and continuous haemovigilance in strengthening transfusion safety.

These findings are particularly important for people living with thalassemia and other conditions requiring regular blood transfusions.

Congratulations to all researchers and healthcare professionals who contributed to this important collaborative effort!”
