Trygve Berge: New AFNOR Paper on AF-related Stroke in Norway

Trygve Berge, Researcher, Cardiologist at Vestre Viken HF, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of the American Heart Association, adding:

“New AFNOR paper on AF–related stroke in Norway:

Congratulations to Mariam Anjum, who has now published her final paper from her PhD project in JAHA — Journal of the American Heart Association.

In this nationwide AFNOR study, we followed the entire Norwegian population from 2001 through 2021. Of 227,575 first-ever strokes, almost 30% were related to atrial fibrillation, and the proportion increased from 22% to 31%.

While the incidence of ischemic stroke without atrial fibrillation declined substantially, the incidence of AF-related ischemic stroke remained stable overall, and increased in younger age groups. 2/3 of AF-related ischemic strokes occurred in people who were not using oral anticoagulation.

The findings underscore the need for improved strategies for AF detection and stroke prevention, particularly in younger populations, and greater attention towards management of bleeding risk among older, anticoagulated individuals.

Mariam Anjum will defend her PhD thesis at the University of Oslo on November 6th.

Grateful to all co-authors in the AFNOR study group.”
