Maternal Mortality: A Global Crisis We Must Solve

“Maternal Mortality: A Global Crisis We Can Help Solve

Every day worldwide, 𝟳𝟭𝟮 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗲 from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Nearly 𝘁𝘄𝗼-𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀 of these deaths occur in fragile, conflict-affected countries.
A new 𝗨𝗡 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 shows maternal deaths have dropped 𝟰𝟬% 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟬. Progress? Yes—but far from equal. Many 𝗹𝗼𝘄- 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲-𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗟𝗠𝗜𝗖𝘀), especially in sub-Saharan Africa, are still facing worsening trends.

𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀:

𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮: MMR ≈ 530 per 100,000 live births (55% increase )
𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮: MMR ≈ 1,047 per 100,000 (14% increase), ~𝟳𝟱,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆, the highest globally
𝗗𝗥 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗼: MMR ≈ 547 per 100,000 (16% increase)

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗲 (𝗣𝗣𝗛) is the 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 (~𝟮𝟱%), and in sub-Saharan Africa, 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟴𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗣𝗛 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 are due to lack of timely blood transfusions, hypoxia and hemorrhagic shock.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗸:
Blood saves lives—but in Africa and parts of South Asia, 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁𝘆.
Fatal outcomes often happen 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲, but because of 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗛𝗢𝗖 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.
We believe 𝗕𝗛𝗢𝗖 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, acting as a 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 for mothers in critical need.
By 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱, BHOC provides healthcare providers with a tool to 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 and give every mother a fighting chance.

𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Equity in maternal survival means 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗽.
We need:

Stronger blood donation networks
Reliable transfusion infrastructure
Life-saving solutions 𝗕𝗛𝗢𝗖, 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆, 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 !

Every mother deserves a 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵, regardless of geography or income. Thanks to the 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆, we recognize this 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺.
