Mahesan Subramaniam: Regular, Brisk Walking Increases Your Heart Rate and Strengthens Your Heart Muscle Over Time

“Studies have revealed that when men walk at least 7,000 steps per day they reduce their risk of early death by up to 70%.
Regular, brisk walking increases your heart rate and strengthens your heart muscle over time. This improved cardiovascular fitness helps lower blood pressure and enhances blood flow throughout the body, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Regular walking also has been shown to improve cholesterol profiles by increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good” cholesterol, and decreasing low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol. This helps prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries that can lead to heart attack.
Walking also helps regulate blood sugar levels by making the body more sensitive to insulin. This improves glucose uptake into cells and lowers the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Walking burns calories and boosts metabolism, which helps men maintain a healthy weight or lose body fat. This reduces the strain on the heart and other organs, lowering the risk of many chronic diseases.
Chronic, low-level inflammation is a known driver of aging and disease. Regular brisk walking has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body, which helps to slow down the aging process at a cellular level.
Beyond heart disease and diabetes, walking can lower the risk of other serious health issues, including certain types of cancer, dementia and depression.
As a weight-bearing exercise, walking also builds stronger bones, increases muscle endurance, and improves balance and coordination. These effects help men maintain independence and reduce the risk of falls and fractures as they age.
