Hind Ali: Sources Of Error in Cell Counts
Hind Ali, Medical Laboratory Specialist, post on LinkedIn:
”Sources Of Error in Cell Counts
1-Cold agglutinins may result into:
- Low RBC counts
- High MCV
- Incorrect hematocrit and MCHC
- The right side of the red cell histogram shows additional bump.
2-Fragmented or very microcytic red cells may result into:
- Decreased red cell counts
- Flagging of the platelet count as the red cells become closer in size to the platelets and cause an abnormal platelet histogram
- The population is visible at the left side of the red cell histogram and the right end of the platelet histogram.
3-Platelet clumps and platelet satellitosis may result into:
- Falsely decreased platelet counts. Platelet clumps can be seen on the right side of the platelet histogram.
4-Giant platelets may result into:
- The right hand tail of the histogram to remain elevated and may be seen at the left of the red cell histogram (if platelets approach or exceed the size of the red cells).
5-Nucleated red blood cells presence may result into:
- Interference with the WBC being counted as white cells/lymphocytes
- WBC histograms alteration.”
