Muhammad Awidi: IV Iron During Acute Infection Shows Improved Outcomes
Muhammad Awidi, Hematology and Oncology Fellow at Roswell Park Cancer Center, reposted from Andreas Tiede on LinkedIn:
”Congratulations to our fellow, Dr. Haris Sohail, on presenting his work at the American Society of Hematology Plenary Session, an exceptional achievement and a testament to the quality of research coming from our program.
His study explores the safety and outcomes of administering intravenous iron to patients with iron deficiency anemia during acute infections, addressing a long-standing clinical debate and raising an important and potentially practice-changing question in hematology.
A special acknowledgment goes to Dr. Amir Kamran for his continuous mentorship, support, and guidance to the next generation of hematology and oncology physicians. Our fellows’ accomplishments reflect his dedication to scholarly excellence and patient-centered care.
Proud of the team and the meaningful work being done.”
Quoting Andreas Tiede‘s post:
”Should iron deficiency be corrected in hospitalised patients with infection? Or does the iron feed bacteria or viruses?
Yes, we should give iron! Short- and long-term mortality was significantly decreased; Hb was better. Simply great.”
