Ayesha Zia and Taem: New ISTH Guidance for Pediatric PE Outcomes
Ayesha Zia, Professor of Pediatrics, Associate Division Chief, Clinical Sciences Research, Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, posted on LinkedIn:
”If you conduct pediatric Pulmonary Embolism (PE) research, our recent International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) SSC communication on research outcomes in pediatric PE should guide your outcome selection. It reflects two years of careful, multidisciplinary, evidence-informed consensus from experts with deep PE expertise.
In this document, we propose clinically relevant outcomes, standardized definitions, and recommended timing of assessment for:
- mortality
- bleeding
- recurrence
- post-PE syndrome
- endovascular therapy outcomes
- patient-reported outcomes, and
- healthcare utilization
It also provides pediatric-specific considerations for imaging, echocardiography, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing, emphasizing alignment with existing frameworks.
Together, this work provides a foundation for more rigorous, comparable, and patient-centered PE research and Clinical Trials as the field continues to grow.
Grateful to my co-authors for their collaboration.
Now out in Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH).”
