Do Natural Anticoagulant Deficiencies Worsen Ischaemic Stroke Severity?
Sodiq Lawal, Peer Reviewer Interventional Neuroradiology at Sage, shared on LinkedIn:
“Could deficiencies in natural anticoagulants influence how severe an ischaemic stroke becomes, especially in under-studied African populations?
I’m pleased to share our newly published study examining Protein C and Protein S levels in Nigerian adults with acute ischaemic stroke and how they relate to stroke severity and functional outcomes.
Key findings:
- Protein C levels were significantly lower in patients with ischaemic stroke compared with healthy controls
- Lower Protein C showed a weak but significant correlation with stroke severity
- Protein S levels showed no significant difference
- Neither protein was associated with short-term functional outcomes
Why this matters:
Our findings suggest that Protein C deficiency may reflect stroke severity rather than recovery, raising important questions about its pathophysiological role and potential utility as a biomarker in low-resource settings, where stroke burden is rising rapidly.

I’d really value perspectives from clinicians and researchers:
Do you see a role for thrombophilia markers like Protein C in stroke risk stratification or research, particularly in LMICs?”
