”Blood Diseases and Heredity
Genetics plays a role in many blood diseases, causing inherited disorders such as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, hemophilia, and von Willebrand disease, which are passed down through generations due to mutations in genes that affect blood cells or clotting factors.
Diagnosis often involves genetic testing, and treatment is aimed at correcting deficiencies or symptoms, but some conditions, such as Rh incompatibility, can also occur spontaneously.
Common inherited blood diseases:
- Sickle cell anemia (SCA) and thalassemia: affect the structure of hemoglobin and the shape of red blood cells, leading to their destruction;
- Hemophilia (A, B, C): a deficiency of coagulation factors VIII or IX, XI, causes excessive bleeding, is transmitted on the X chromosome, more often in males;
- von Willebrand disease: a deficiency of the von Willebrand protein, which is involved in clotting, is inherited most often;
Blood types and Rh factor: incompatibility of the parents’ blood types (Rh incompatibility) can cause hemolytic disease of the newborn.
Acquired diseases: Some conditions, such as anemia (iron deficiency) or leukemia, may have a genetic predisposition, but are not always directly transmitted, or may arise due to other factors (diet, medications, other diseases).
