Mehmood-ul-Hassan Malik Asks: When to Perform Hb Variant Analysis in Iron-Deficient Pregnancy?
Mehmood-ul-Hassan Malik, Consultant Hematopathologist at Ministry of Health Saudi Arabia, shared on LinkedIn:
“Your patient is an 8-week pregnant having suspicion of iron deficiency anaemia and β-Thalassaemia trait.
You fear that the iron deficiency may give a falsely low HbA2 value, so you first start iron therapy after seeing low ferritin.
After how much time of starting the iron therapy will you advise Haemoglobin variant analysis to get an accurate assessment about β-Thalassaemia trait?”
