Rob Maloney: A Bruise that Did Not Go Away…
Rob Maloney, Chief Executive Officer of Hemophilia of Georgia, shared on LinkedIn:
”A bruise that didn’t go away.
A teenager playing baseball took a hard shot to the thigh.
There was a bruise and some swelling. Nothing unusual.
Except it didn’t go away.
A week passed. Then two. Still swollen and painful.
Doctor after doctor. Then the words no parent expects to hear: Hemophilia.
Years of their son’s life instantly reframed.
How did we miss this?
What if he’d hit his head instead?
What happens next time?
And for his mom, a deeper sentence she could barely get out:
“I didn’t know I was a carrier.”
If you’ve walked near this world, you know the emotional terrain.
Fear and guilt. Confusion and overwhelmed.
This is the part of healthcare you’ll never see on an organizational chart or in a claim file.
It’s the human weight behind every rare diagnosis.
When that family eventually landed with Hemophilia of Georgia, everything shifted.
Our nurse and social worker didn’t start with paperwork, but with presence.
• Home infusion training
• What to do before the next dental procedure or surgery
• Insurance navigation
• Education on the disease
• Scholarships and long-term support
• Space for a mom to ask every question she’d been holding in
This wasn’t a quick discharge and a follow-up call.
It was wraparound care. Clinical, emotional, and practical.
That moment taught me something I haven’t forgotten.
A rare diagnosis requires a rare kind of support.
And when it happens, families shouldn’t feel like they’re walking through it alone.”
