Piotr Czempik Shares His Latest Contribution to Acta Haematologica Polonic
Piotr Czempik, Chair of Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at Medical University of Silesia, shared on LinkedIn:
”I’m pleased to share my latest contribution to Acta Haematologica Polonica:
“Intravenous iron is safe and effective in patients with infection and sepsis.”
This Letter to the Editor expands on an important and often controversial topic – the role of intravenous iron therapy in acutely ill patients.
Drawing on several years of research in iron metabolism among critically ill and septic patients, I discuss:
- The high prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in this population
- The diagnostic challenges caused by inflammation-driven distortion of traditional iron markers
- The value of reticulocyte hemoglobin content (RET‑Hb) as a reliable, inflammation‑independent biomarker
- Clinical observations suggesting that intravenous iron can be administered safely, even in sepsis
- The need for individualized decision‑making and future randomized trials
As our understanding of iron metabolism in critical illness evolves, I hope this piece contributes to a more nuanced discussion and encourages further research in this area.
Thank you to colleagues and collaborators who continue to push this field forward.”
