Nour Al-Mozain։ When Blood Donation Depends on Traffic Conditions
Nour Al-Mozain, Hemopathologist, Consultant at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, shared a post on LinkedIn։
“90 minutes in traffic.
10 minutes to donate whole blood.
As the unprecedented traffic congestion has become a struggle for everyone living in Riyadh over the past few weeks, this has become the new timeline for blood donation.
This issue will not only affect lifestyle but also impact the healthcare system as a potential threat to the blood supply.
We ask donors to be committed.
But are we (blood banking committee, hospital and healthcare leaderships) making it realistic when donation means navigating 2–3 hours of congestion to reach a hospital-based blood center, during fixed working hours ?
How can we address the upcoming concern?
- Bring donation closer to people — mobile units in business hubs and universities.
- Open standalone community donor centers
- Extend hours beyond traditional hospital schedules
- Actively recruited and empower hospital employees to come and donate during their busy scheduale
Because blood availability should never depend on traffic conditions, decentralizing donation centers has become an urgent need more than ever.”
