Farzad Rafiei: How a Snakebite Complication Evolves Into Portal Vein Thrombosis in Months
Farzad Rafiei, Research Assistant at Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences and Health Services, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
”I’m excited to share our recent case report: ‘Portal vein thrombosis as a clinical dilemma in Echis carinatus envenomation: a case report and review of the literature.’
Case highlight:
We report a 15-year-old male who, months after envenomation, developed:
- Portal vein thrombosis
- Portal hypertension
- Splenomegaly
- Secondary esophageal varices
What I found particularly interesting was seeing how a snakebite complication could evolve months later into portal vein thrombosis and esophageal varices.
This was truly remarkable and emphasizes the need for long-term follow-up.
Also, It was a pleasure working with Shahab Sheikhalishahi, an excellent collaborator.”
