Beenish Abbas: Synergistic Tumor-Suppressive Effects of Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D in TNBC
Beenish Abbas, Resident cardiologist at Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Carmen J. Narvaez et al., published in The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology:
“According to a study published in 2023 in The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, researchers looked at how vitamin K2 (menaquinone-4) affects triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells grown in the lab, both alone and combined with vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃). They found that vitamin K2 by itself reduced the number of viable cells in some TNBC cell lines, indicating that K2 has direct tumor-suppressive effects in these models.
The study also showed that when vitamin K2 and vitamin D were used together, they significantly decreased viable TNBC cell numbers more than either treatment alone in certain cell lines, with effects such as cell cycle arrest and changes in cell morphology.
This combined effect was stronger than with either vitamin by itself and suggests additive or synergistic tumor-suppressive actions in vitro.”
