Hariom Rajput: Early Recognition and Prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis
Hariom Rajput, Data Entry and Office Automation Specialist at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a potentially dangerous condition in which a blood clot develops within the deep veins, most frequently in the lower limbs. The clot commonly forms in the calf, thigh, or pelvic veins where blood flow may become sluggish. When circulation slows or the vessel wall is injured, clot formation becomes more likely.
The major concern with DVT is that a portion of the clot may detach and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs, leading to a life-threatening complication called Pulmonary embolism. Because of this risk, early recognition and management are essential to prevent severe outcomes.
Prevention: Prevention of DVT focuses on maintaining healthy blood flow and reducing clotting risk. Regular movement and leg exercises are especially important during prolonged travel or extended bed rest. Adequate hydration helps prevent blood from becoming overly concentrated. In high-risk individuals—such as post-surgical patients or those with a history of clotting disorders—doctors may recommend compression stockings or preventive anticoagulant therapy.
Lifestyle modifications, including maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding smoking, also play a key role in lowering the overall risk of thrombosis.”
