Aswin K Mohan: The Most Common Misconceptions on Blood Donation
Aswin K Mohan, Medicine Specialist at AIIMS Bibinagar, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”ALERT: A WAR IS COMING. DON’T DONATE NOW. SAVE IT FOR AN EMERGENCY…
April Fools!
Blood donation has long been surrounded by myths – not just on April Fools’ Day, but throughout the year.
Let’s clear up some of the most common misconceptions:
1. ‘Blood donation is very painful. It’s like a surgical procedure.’
Blood donation is simple, safe, and the discomfort is minimal.
2. ‘Blood is always available – it’s not a problem.’
Blood doesn’t grow on trees. Every unit must be donated, making it both scarce and precious.
3. ‘The donation process takes hours.’
The process is quick, safe, and well-supervised—usually completed within about an hour.
4. ‘My blood group is common, so there’s no need for me to donate.’
Blood is always needed. Even common blood types are in constant demand.
5. ‘I have a tattoo, so I can’t donate.’
Don’t assume you’re ineligible. Many restrictions are temporary—check with your nearest blood center.
Don’t be misled by myths or misinformation.
Be informed. Be responsible. Donate blood.”
