Domenico Girelli: WHO 2024 Guidelines Reveal Higher Global Anemia Burden and Epidemiological Shift
Domenico Girelli, Full Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of Medicine at the University of Verona, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
”Just published a study in which I’m honored to be a part.
It highlights how the updated WHO 2024 guidelines on hemoglobin adjustment for altitude are reshaping the global burden of anemia.
Key findings:
- Global prevalence rises to 26.4% in 2023
- Over 198 million additional cases compared to previous estimates
- Anaemia becomes the second leading cause of disability worldwide
- Strongest impact in low- and middle-income settings and mid-altitude regions
This study shows how improved methodologies can substantially shift our epidemiological understanding and better inform health policies and interventions.”
