Andrew Zapfel: Expanding Newborn Screening for Sickle Cell Disease in Africa

Andrew Zapfel, Adjunct Professor at The George Washington University, Interim Board Member at World Coalition on Sickle Cell Disease (WCSCD), Deputy Director, Global SCD Initiatives and Alliances at American Society of Hematology, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co – authored, adding:

“I’m excited to share the newest publication from the American Society of Hematology Consortium on Newborn Screening in Africa!

In this paper, we outline our ongoing efforts to expand screening and ensure children with Sickle Cell Disease are successfully linked to care.

We have a lot more work to do as we continue to work with health systems to link children to ongoing care.

We’re encouraged by the strong partnerships with advocates, community based organizations, industry partners, and national governments forming across countries and clinical sites to strengthen the screening and linkage to care ecosystem.

I look forward to sharing more updates as this work continues!”
